Terms and conditions
The rules that apply when you rent a car from us. Written to be read, not to hide anything in a subclause.
These terms apply to every self-drive car rental from SelfDrive Car Chandigarh. Anything specific to your booking — the daily rate, the deposit amount, the kilometre allowance and the outstation rate — is confirmed in writing when you book, and that written quote sits alongside these terms.
Who can rent
You must be at least 21 years old and hold a full, valid Indian driving licence. Premium cars may carry a higher minimum age, which we tell you with your quote. A learner licence does not qualify. Visitors from outside India may rent with a foreign licence in English, or an International Driving Permit alongside a home licence, together with a passport and valid visa.
We check the original licence and one original government photo ID at handover. Photocopies and phone photos are not accepted.
Who may drive
Only the person whose licence we checked, plus any additional driver we agreed and verified at booking. An unlisted driver is not covered by the insurance, and any loss arising while the car is driven by someone we have not verified is yours.
Booking and payment
Nothing is charged to hold a booking. The rental amount and the security deposit are payable at handover. Fuel, tolls, parking charges, state entry taxes and traffic fines are yours throughout.
Security deposit
A refundable security deposit of ₹5,000 applies to most cars; premium cars carry a higher deposit, confirmed with your quote. We photograph the car with you at handover and again at return. The deposit is refunded within 24 hours of the car being returned in the same condition, to the same account or method it was paid from.
We may deduct from the deposit only for: damage recorded at return that was not present in the handover photographs, missing fuel against the level at handover, unpaid traffic fines incurred during your rental, extra kilometres beyond your allowance, or late return. Any deduction is itemised in writing.
Kilometres
Local rentals include 250 km per day. Kilometres beyond that are charged at the per-km rate stated in your quote. Outstation trips are billed per kilometre from the start instead of against a daily allowance: ₹12–18 per km for sedans and ₹16–24 per km for SUVs, depending on the car.
Using the car
The car is rented for ordinary private use. It may not be used for: any illegal purpose; carrying passengers or goods for hire or reward; racing, testing or motorsport; towing; driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs; or by anyone other than a verified driver. It may not be sub-rented or handed to a third party.
Outstation travel is permitted on every car in our fleet. Please tell us the route when you book so we can advise on the car and confirm the outstation rate.
Smoking in the car and carrying pets without prior agreement both attract a cleaning charge.
Fuel
The car is supplied at a recorded fuel level and should be returned at that level. Fuel is not included in the rental rate.
Return and extensions
Return the car at the agreed time and place. If you need longer, tell us before the rental ends and we will extend it if the car is free. Late return without agreement is charged at the applicable rate plus any cost caused to the next booking.
Breakdown, accident and damage
If the car breaks down or is involved in an accident, call us first, before arranging a garage or a tow. Roadside assistance is arranged through us. In an accident, do not admit liability at the scene, report it to the police where required, and obtain a copy of the report.
The car is insured. Where a claim arises, you are responsible for the insurance excess and for any loss the insurer declines because of a breach of these terms — for example driving under the influence, or an unverified driver at the wheel. Tyre, wheel-rim, underbody and interior damage may fall outside the policy; we will tell you the position honestly rather than after the fact.
Traffic fines
Any challan issued during your rental period is yours, including one that arrives after the car is returned. Where a fine reaches us later, we will send you the notice and details.
Cancellation
See refunds and cancellations.
Our right to refuse or recover a car
We may decline a rental at handover if documents cannot be verified, if the driver appears unfit to drive, or if the details given at booking do not match. We may recover the car during the rental if it is being used in breach of these terms. We would rather turn a booking away than hand over a car into a situation we can see going wrong.
Liability
Our liability in connection with a rental is limited to the amount you paid for it. We are not liable for indirect losses such as missed flights, missed events or consequential travel costs. Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited under Indian law.
Governing law
These terms are governed by Indian law, and the courts at Chandigarh have jurisdiction.
